Update

The Observatory can accommodate up to 9 people in two dormitories, you need to bring your own sleeping bags and it is self-catering. As well as Birdwatchers, we welcome people from many areas of interest including Moths, Butterflies, Bugs and Beetles or just a general interest in Nature and the local environment. Please forward any Dungeness recording area records to the Warden.

19th Dec

A nice day but not much to be seen. The sea produced a Velvet Scoter, 175 Kittiwakes, 787 auks, 154 Red-throated Divers and 197 Gannets. Four Chiffchaffs were seen in the bushes.

Four Grey Seals were feeding offshore.

18th Dec

Strong winds and rain restricted observations to the sea where 4.5hrs of watching produced 57 Brent Geese east, six Wigeon, 352 Kittiwakes, three Caspian Gulls, 1863 auks, 73 Red-throated Divers, a Black-throated Diver, five Fulmars and 256 Gannets.

Four Grey Seals were feeding offshore.

Just two Shelducks, a Velvet Scoter and 39 Red-throated Divers were of note at sea and four Chiffchaffs were seen in the bushes.

16th Dec

Seawatching produced 76 Brent Geese and a Sandwich Tern east and a Shelduck, two Red-breasted Mergansers, two Mediterranean Gulls, seven Caspian Gulls, a Yellow-legged Gull and 72 Red-throated Divers. Three Chiffchaffs were seen in the Trapping Area.

Four Grey Seals were feeding offshore.

15th Dec

The beach was the place to be with a Little Gull, three Mediterranean Gulls, an excellent total of seven Caspian Gulls and a Yellow-legged Gull.

Two Grey Seals were seen offshore.

14th Dec

A Woodcock, seven Chiffchaffs, four Firecrests and eight Siskins were seen in the Trapping Area.

Two Grey Seals were seen offshore and a Brown Hare was seen on the land.

13th Dec

An interesting day on the land with a Golden Plover, a Merlin, an excellent total of 16 Chiffchaffs, two Dartford Warblers, four Firecrests, 15 Goldcrests and ten Siskins. Seawatching produced 49 Kittiwakes, 1482 auks and 249 Gannets.

Four Grey Seals were feeding offshore.

12th Dec

Eighteen Brent Geese flew east and 68 Red-throated Diver and 281 Gannets were seen. A check of the trapping area produced a Merlin, six Chiffchaffs and a Firecrest.

11th Dec

A check of the bushes produced nine Chiffchaffs and a Redpoll and a Siskin flew over. Seawatching was slow with just four Wigeon, a Mediterranean Gull and 39 Red-throated Divers of note.

10th Dec

Two Velvet Scoters, 146 Kittiwakes and 342 auks were the best the sea could offer. Five Chiffchaffs were seen in the bushes.

A Porpoise and a Grey Seal were seen offshore.
