Update

The Observatory can accommodate up to 9 people in two dormitories, you need to bring your own sleeping bags and it is self-catering. As well as Birdwatchers, we welcome people from many areas of interest including Moths, Butterflies, Bugs and Beetles or just a general interest in Nature and the local environment. Please forward any Dungeness recording area records to the Warden.

31st Dec

A check of the land produced two Shovelers and a Teal on the Long Pits, a Chiffchaff and three Firecrests in the trapping area and a Dartford Warbler at the entrance to the estate. A Merlin was seen at the Point. Seawatching produced four Shelduck, five Pintail, 348 auks sp. and 598 Red-throated Divers.


30th Dec

A quiet day with just eight Wigeon, two Velvet Scoters, a Sandwich Tern, 204 Red-throated Divers and 7000 Cormorants offshore. A Chiffchaff was heard in the trapping area.

29th Dec

A 90-minute seawatch this morning produced two Wigeon, 32 Great Crested Grebes, 465 auks sp., 341 Red-throated Divers, a Great Northern Diver and 7000 Cormorants.

A Grey Seal was feeding offshore and a dead Porpoise was washed up on the beach. 

28th Dec

27th Dec

The morning seawatch produced three Shelduck, a Pintail, two Velvet Scoters, 58 Kittiwakes, three Mediterranean Gulls, 1870 Guillemots, 98 Razorbills, 272 Red-throated Divers and 324 Gannets.

Two Common Seals and two Grey Seals were feeding offshore.

26th Dec

Seawatching this morning produced 126 Great Crested Grebes, an Avocet, 10,925 Guillemots, 575 Razorbills, 356 Red-throated Divers, 821 Gannets and 5300 Cormorants. A Merlin and a Dartford Warbler were seen at the Point.

A Porpoise and Grey Seal were seen offshore. 

25th Dec

24th Dec

Two Chiffchaffs and a Firecrest were seen on a quick visit to the trapping area. Seawatching produced 67 Brent Geese, ten Wigeon, three Sanderling, three Dunlin, a Mediterranean Gull and 1970 auks sp. Cormorant numbers increased to 2500.


23rd Dec

The morning seawatch produced nine Shelduck, an Eider, 800 Guillemots, 3000 auks sp, 378 Red-throated Divers and 650 Gannets, all east.

Two Grey Seals were feeding offshore.

22nd Dec

The "spring migration" of Brent Geese gathered strength today with another 707 birds seen during the morning along with eight Shelduck, three Red-breasted Mergansers, a Mediterranean Gull, a Caspian Gull, 1338 auks, 517 Red-throated Divers, three Fulmars and 812 Gannets.

One Grey Seal was seen offshore.

21st Dec

Most of the coverage was offshore again where the easterly passage of Brent Geese continued with 183 birds seen. Other wildfowl included a Mute Swan west, 38 Wigeon, four Velvet Scoters and a Goldeneye along with an adult Yellow-legged Gull, a loitering Great Skua, 198 Red-throated Divers, a Black-throated Diver and 290 Gannets. Three Black Redstarts were feeding along the power station wall.

Two Grey Seals were feeding offshore. 

20th Dec

Eighteen Brent Geese flew east and 119 Kittiwakes and 154 Gannets flew west. An adult Caspian Gull was on the beach. Two Merlins were hunting at the Point.

A nice day but not much to be seen. The sea produced a Velvet Scoter, 175 Kittiwakes, 787 auks, 154 Red-throated Divers and 197 Gannets. Four Chiffchaffs were seen in the bushes.

Strong winds and rain restricted observations to the sea where 4.5hrs of watching produced 57 Brent Geese east, six Wigeon, 352 Kittiwakes, three Caspian Gulls, 1863 auks, 73 Red-throated Divers, a Black-throated Diver, five Fulmars and 256 Gannets.

Four Grey Seals were feeding offshore.

17th Dec

Just two Shelducks, a Velvet Scoter and 39 Red-throated Divers were of note at sea and four Chiffchaffs were seen in the bushes.

16th Dec

Seawatching produced 76 Brent Geese and a Sandwich Tern east and a Shelduck, two Red-breasted Mergansers, two Mediterranean Gulls, seven Caspian Gulls, a Yellow-legged Gull and 72 Red-throated Divers. Three Chiffchaffs were seen in the Trapping Area.

Four Grey Seals were feeding offshore. 

15th Dec

The beach was the place to be with a Little Gull, three Mediterranean Gulls, an excellent total of seven Caspian Gulls and a Yellow-legged Gull.

Two Grey Seals were seen offshore.

14th Dec

A Woodcock, seven Chiffchaffs, four Firecrests and eight Siskins were seen in the Trapping Area.

Two Grey Seals were seen offshore and a Brown Hare was seen on the land.

13th Dec

An interesting day on the land with a Golden Plover, a Merlin, an excellent total of 16 Chiffchaffs, two Dartford Warblers, four Firecrests, 15 Goldcrests and ten Siskins. Seawatching produced 49 Kittiwakes, 1482 auks and 249 Gannets.

Four Grey Seals were feeding offshore.

12th Dec

Eighteen Brent Geese flew east and 68 Red-throated Diver and 281 Gannets were seen. A check of the trapping area produced a Merlin, six Chiffchaffs and a Firecrest.

11th Dec

A check of the bushes produced nine Chiffchaffs and a Redpoll and a Siskin flew over. Seawatching was slow with just four Wigeon, a Mediterranean Gull and 39 Red-throated Divers of note.

10th Dec

Two Velvet Scoters, 146 Kittiwakes and 342 auks were the best the sea could offer. Five Chiffchaffs were seen in the bushes.

A Porpoise and a Grey Seal were seen offshore.

9th Dec

Another windy but warm day limited coverage to the sea where there was a surprising easterly movement of 663 Brent Geese along with a Bar-tailed Godwit, 228 Kittiwakes (west), 443 auks, 165 Red-throated Divers (mostly west) and 327 Gannets were of note.

8th Dec

Strong winds again. Seawatching produced just 343 auks and 56 Red-throated Divers while a check of the bushes saw six Chiffchaffs and a Firecrest.

 Appalling weather and nothing of note to be seen on a day of paperwork.

6th Dec

Gale force winds restricted observations to the sea and beach where 2.25hrs of watching produced a Red-breasted Merganser, 218 Kittiwakes, a Mediterranean Gull, two Caspian Gulls, a Yellow-legged Gull, 291 auks, 43 Red-throated Divers and 580 Gannets.

Two Grey Seals were seen offshore.

5th Dec

Quiet again. A first-winter Caspian Gull was seen at the Point this morning and 30 Wigeon and a Red-breasted Merganser passed offshore.

Three Grey Seals were feeding offshore.  

4th Dec

Quiet. An adult Yellow-legged Gull was seen at the Point.

One Porpoise was seen offshore.

3rd Dec

Two Velvet Scoters flew east this morning and two Red-breasted Mergansers, a Little Gull and 73 Red-throated Divers flew west. A third-winter Caspian Gull was roosting at the Point. Three Chiffchaffs and ten Goldcrests were seen in the bushes and 170 Starlings came in.

2nd Dec

There was a decent movement of birds offshore for a while with two Velvet Scoters, 902 Kittiwakes, two Little Gulls, 1100 auks and 46 Red-throated Divers of note. A check of the bushes produced two Chiffchaffs, a Firecrest and ten Goldcrests.

1st Dec

Not a great deal of coverage but a second-winter Caspian Gull was seen at the boats and 693 Gannets flew west.

Very quiet. A Chiffchaff, two Firecrests and 16 Goldcrests were seen in the Trapping Area and 100 Gannets were feeding offshore.
