Sightings July 2002
1st An unpleasant day with a very strong westerly wind and frequent rain and limited observations. The only significant bird was a single Manx Shearwater west in the evening.
2nd Another day of strong, mostly westerly, winds and heavy squalls at first and continuous rain later restricted observations to the sea. Seawatching produced 18 Manx Shearwaters, 230 Gannets, a Little Gull, 60 Common Terns and eight Little Terns west in 3.25 hours whilst there were two Mediterranean Gulls at the Patch and an adult Yellow-legged Gull at the fishing boats.
3rd

Another dismal day weatherwise but it did produce a few birds at sea and at the Patch. Most birds at sea were flying west and included 25 Manx Shearwaters and 140 Gannets whilst there was an adult Roseate Tern and two Yellow-legged Gulls at the Patch.

Family parties of Wheatears, Black Redstarts and Stonechats were very obvious around the Observatory and 14 Sand Martins flew through. A Hobby hunted over the area during the morning.

4th

A long seawatch during the afternoon produced four Manx Shearwaters and a Red-throated Diver west and five Arctic Skuas flying east whilst at the Patch there was an adult Roseate Tern, two Arctic Terns, two Mediterranean Gulls and two Yellow-legged Gulls.

Passerine migrants included 12 Sand Martins and a Yellow Wagtail. A Hobby hunted over the area and two Collared Doves were also seen.

5th

A day of almost continuous rain and limited coverage. A one-hour seawatch in mid-morning produced five Manx Shearwaters and there was a Roseate Tern, two Mediterranean Gulls and 80 Kittiwakes at the Patch in the evening.

A Black Redstart was singing from the power station.

6th A Mediterranean Gull,  an adult Roseate Tern and an Arctic Tern at the Patch and 1200 Swifts flew through in poor weather during the morning.
7th Two Mediterranean Gulls and a juvenile Caspian Gull and an adult Arctic Tern at the Patch and an Eider offshore. Two Black Redstarts around the Observatory.

8th

A large feeding flock offshore during the morning included 100 Gannets, 2000 Herring Gulls and 200 Sandwich Terns whilst at the Patch there were two Mediterranean Gulls, six Yellow-legged Gulls and two Arctic Terns.

There were at least three Black Redstarts around the power station and 60 Swifts flew over.

9th

Very little of note today with just a second-summer Mediterranean Gull, five adult  Yellow-legged Gulls and 60 Kittiwakes at the Patch and 55 Common Scoters flying west.

Overhead, a Hobby and 250 Swifts were seen and the usual Black Redstart was singing from the power station.

10th A very quiet day with just a first-summer Mediterranean Gull and an adult Yellow-legged Gull at the Patch of note.
11th A quiet day with one Manx Shearwater flying west and large numbers of gulls seen at the Patch including nine Yellow-legged Gulls, three of which were juveniles.

12th

There were large numbers of birds offshore with the arrival of shoals of Mackerel with at least 100 Gannets, 1500 Herring Gulls and 200 Sandwich Terns feeding in the area. A Black Tern was also seen offshore and at the Patch there were five Yellow-legged Gulls including two juveniles, two adult Mediterranean Gulls and two first-summer Arctic Terns.

There was a large movement of Swifts with at least 500 passing through and also 40 Sand Martins and two Yellow Wagtails. The male Black Redstart was singing from the power station roof again.

13th

The highlight of the day was an immature Spoonbill which flew over the power station and out to sea. There were two Mediterranean and three adult Yellow-legged Gulls at the Patch and an Arctic Skua and two Eider flew by offshore.

Some diurnal movement occurred with 110 Swifts, 100 Sand Martins and six Yellow Wagtails passing through.

14th There were six Mediterranean Gulls (four adults and two second-summers) and seven Yellow-legged Gulls (one adult and six juveniles) at the Patch and at least 100 Sandwich Terns feeding offshore. Overhead 70 Swift and 185 Sand Martins passed through and a Great Spotted Woodpecker was seen.
15th

Large numbers of birds offshore again with at least nine Yellow-legged Gulls (including seven juveniles) and an adult Mediterranean Gull at the Patch and 200 Sandwich Terns feeding offshore.

The trickle of migrants overhead continued with a few Swifts and Sand Martins and 11 Yellow Wagtails passing through and a Greenshank also flew west offshore.

 

Following a very busy weekend for fisherman, a juvenile Yellow-legged Gull was found caught in fishing line. The bird was released but did provide an excellent opportunity to study the fine plumage details of this species at close range (see below.)

Also of interest, a Bee-eater was seen well for a few minutes on the RSPB reserve at Dengemarsh during the early morning. 

16th A very quiet day with very little at the Patch and only small numbers of birds passing overhead. Most of the seabirds were feeding well out to sea and included 50 Gannets, 100 Kittiwakes and 100 Sandwich Terns and 51 Sand Martins and four Yellow Wagtails passed through. Two Black Redstarts were also seen.
17th Another fairly quiet day although a Blackcap was trapped in the area and a few birds passed overhead including 40 Swift, three Yellow Wagtails and a Lesser Redpoll. There were reasonable numbers of birds at the Patch including four juvenile Yellow-legged Gulls and the first juvenile Mediterranean Gull of the summer.

18th A first-summer female Montagu's Harrier was hunting over rough ground near the fishing boats between 1115 and 1140hrs before departing in a northerly direction and there was an adult Little Gull at the Patch.
19th Very quiet. Just an adult Mediterranean Gull and four juvenile Yellow-legged Gulls at the Patch and three Yellow Wagtails overhead.
20th Another quiet day with just two Black Redstarts around the power station and six Yellow Wagtails overhead. A flock of 50 Gannets was feeding offshore in the evening.
21st Still quiet with a Little Gull at the Patch and 260 Swift and nine Yellow Wagtails overhead of note.
22nd

A better day than of late with a trickle of birds overhead and large numbers of birds at the Patch. Notable birds passing overhead included a Hobby, 16 Yellow Wagtails and a Grey Wagtail whilst in the trapping area there was a singing Lesser Whitethroat.

The Patch provided plenty of interest with at least three juvenile Mediterranean Gulls, an adult Little Gull and a minimum of 14 Yellow-legged Gulls including ten juveniles. Of greater interest, one, possibly two, juvenile Caspian Gulls were also present.

Of interest from outside the Observatory recording area, an adult Pectoral Sandpiper was found shortly before dark as the tide came in at Lade Sands. Seven adult Mediterranean Gulls were also seen here.

23rd A miserable day with strong winds and frequent drizzle resulting in just one juvenile Mediterranean Gull and nine Yellow-legged Gulls being seen at the Patch.

There was no sign of the Pectoral Sandpiper at Lade Sands.

24th The first small arrival of grounded migrants of the autumn included four Willow Warblers and two Lesser Whitethroats and more surprisingly, a Wood Warbler which spent the day feeding in bushes opposite the Pumphouse on the Long Pits. Two hundred Sand Martins also passed through.

The Patch also provided considerable interest with an adult Caspian Gull of note (see photos), along with two juvenile Mediterranean Gulls, an adult Little Gull, 14 Yellow-legged Gulls and a first-summer Arctic Tern.

25th The Patch continued to provide interest with the adult Caspian Gull still present and a large increase in the number of Yellow-legged Gulls with at least 24 present and including 17 juveniles and the adult Little Gull.

There was very little in the bushes except for a Lesser Whitethroat but overhead a Whimbrel, 150 Swifts, 300 Sand Martins and ten Yellow Wagtails passed through.

26th There was a small arrival of Willow Warblers with at least ten in the area along with a Lesser Whitethroat, whilst overhead, 550 Sand Martins and 24 Yellow Wagtails passed through.

27th The Patch produced two Mediterranean Gulls, two adult Little Gulls and six Yellow-legged Gulls. A Great Spotted Woodpecker and two Willow Warblers were found in the area and 400 Sand Martins and seven Yellow Wagtails passed through.
28th The Patch produced two juvenile Mediterranean Gulls, eight Yellow-legged Gulls and the first juvenile Black Tern of the autumn. There were just two Willow Warblers in the area and 50 Sand Martins, 40 Swallows and 16 Yellow Wagtails passed through.
29th A quiet day with just a Great Spotted Woodpecker, a Lesser Whitethroat and three Willow Warblers in the bushes, ten Yellow Wagtails overhead and six Yellow-legged Gulls at the Patch.
30th There were just two Willow Warblers in the bushes and two Black Redstarts around the Power Station. Four Yellow Wagtails flew over.
31st

There was a juvenile Mediterranean Gull, an adult Little Gull, 12 Yellow-legged Gulls, an adult Roseate Tern and single juvenile Arctic Tern and Black Tern at the Patch.

A Black Redstart was seen around the Power Station and three Willow Warblers were seen in the bushes.
