Sightings December 2005
The 2004 Annual Report is now available and costs £6.50 (inc. p&p). 
1st A day of strong south to south easterly winds brought a steady trickle of Gannets and Kittiwakes throughout the day and quality in the form of a Great Northern Diver, two Velvet Scoters, a Great Skua and a Little Auk west.
2nd Gale-force south-easterly winds prevented any observations other than seawatching but even this became very quiet after mid-morning. The highlight of the early morning session was a Leach's Petrel with numbers provided by more Gannets and Kittiwakes. Fourteen Red-breasted Mergansers were also of interest.
3rd Poor weather continues to limit observations. Seawatching produced two Pintails, 11 Shoveler, two Velvet Scoters and six Red-breasted Mergansers. A Merlin was also seen.
4th Dismal weather and very limited coverage.
5th An adult Mediterranean Gull and a second-summer Yellow-legged Gull were seen at the Patch.
6th A trickle of finches moved through during the morning with two flocks of Twite totaling 11 birds, along with 15 Siskins and two Bullfinches of note.
7th A Little Owl and six Chiffchaffs were the only notable birds on a very foggy day.
8th A third-winter Caspian Gull at the Patch and an adult Yellow-legged Gull at the fishing boats were the only birds of note.

9th Very quiet.
10th A Black-throated Diver flew west at sea.
11th There was a juvenile Pomarine Skua chasing Kittiwakes offshore in the afternoon and a Long-eared Owl was flying around the Observatory after dark. A Little Owl was also heard and there were two Chiffchaffs in the trapping area.
12th A change to a fresh north-easterly wind produced some interesting seawatching with the highlights being four Pomarine, two Arctic and a Great Skua and 8000 auks west in a two hour spell during the morning. Two first-winter Caspian Gulls were also seen on the beach at the fishing boats and two adult Mediterranean Gulls flew east during the afternoon.
13th Fewer birds at sea today but still quite productive with 180 Red-throated Divers, a Little Egret arriving from the south, a few duck including 20 Pintail, 60 Wigeon and four Shoveler, an adult Mediterranean Gull and still large numbers of auks, mostly Guillemots, offshore. A second-winter Caspian Gull was roosting amongst the gulls near the fishing boats for a time at high tide. A trickle of finches passed through with 20 Goldfinches and 12 Siskins of note.
14th Very little to be seen.
15th Still nothing to report.
16th There were a  handful of Red-throated Divers and Guillemots offshore and three Chiffchaffs at the Long Pits.
17th There was a first-winter Caspian Gull at the Patch and a Woodcock was flushed from the beach in the morning.
18th A Black-throated Diver and a Slavonian Grebe were seen offshore.
19th Two Caspian Gulls, an adult and a first-winter, were on the beach at the Patch at low tide.
21st A new first-winter Caspian Gull was found at the Patch along with an adult Mediterranean Gull.

22nd Little of note.
23rd Two Great Skuas and 310 Gannets flew east during a 30 minute watch from the fishing boats in the morning.
29th A Red-necked Grebe and an adult Mediterranean Gull were seen at the Patch.
31st Good numbers of birds offshore with at least 400 Red-throated Divers, nine Shovelers, 100 Kittiwakes and 400 auks sp west during the morning.
