Fauna

Mammals

Rabbits and Foxes are seen on most days throughout the year. Stoats and Weasels are less frequently seen. Both Pigmy and Common Shrews are present along with Wood Mouse. Bats are occasionally seen but rarely identified to species. Most of the more interesting mammal records involve marine animals.

Feb.4th		One Porpoise was seen.
Feb.3rd		Two Porpoises and a Grey Seal were seen.
Jan.31st		One Porpoise was feeding offshore throughout the day and a dead one was washed up onto the beach. More intriguingly what appeared to be some body parts and the skin of a deer (probably a Fallow) were also washed up on the beach.

Aug.20th		Porpoise numbers were back up to strength with at least 19 individuals counted in the evening and the Grey Seal was seen again.

Aug.18th		At least seven Porpoises and a Grey Seal were feeding offshore and a Brown Hare was also seen.
Aug.17th		At least 17 Porpoises and the Grey Seal were feeding offshore again and a Brown Hare was also seen.
Aug.16th		At least six Porpoises were feeding offshore.
Aug.15th		At least ten Porpoises and the Grey Seal were feeding offshore.

Aug.2nd		A dead calm sea made for excellent viewing conditions and at least 20 Porpoises and a Grey Seal were seen. In addition, a very large Thresher Shark was seen leaping clear of the water. A Brown Hare was also seen.

May 3rd		One Porpoise was seen offshore and the Badger was seen in the moat around mid-afternoon!
May 1st		Eight Porpoises were seen offshore and the Badger showed very well in the back garden again.
Apr.30th		Four Porpoises were seen offshore and the Badger was in the back garden again.
Apr.29th		The highlight of the day was a pod of three White-beaked Dolphins which moved slowly east at a distance of about 1500m during the early morning seawatch. This is only the second record in the last 22 years (at least) although boat fisherman have been reporting regular sightings for the last month or so but usually several miles offshore. Other mammals included five Porpoises and a Grey Seal.

Apr.25th		Four Porpoises and a Grey Seal were seen offshore whilst a Badger spent the early evening hours in the back garden.
Apr.24th		Five Porpoises were seen.
Apr.23rd		A Common Seal and at least 12 Porpoises were seen offshore, a Brown Hare was seen and the Badger gave superb views in the back garden again this evening.
Apr.22nd		Seven Porpoises were offshore and a Badger was seen in the moat in mid-morning.
Apr.21st		Eight Porpoises and a Brown Hare were seen.
Apr.18th		One Porpoise was seen.
Apr.17th		Six Porpoises were offshore for much of the day and a Badger was seen again in the back garden.
Apr.16th		Five Porpoise were seen.
Apr.14th		Without any doubt the highlight of today was a pod of four Orcas, (Killer Whales), and all likely to be males judging by their dorsal fin size and shapes. They were watched for about 20 minutes in mid-morning as they fed about a mile offshore. Also seen offshore were two groups of identified dolphins, three Porpoises and a Grey Seal.

Apr.6th		An unusual record for the Observatory area involved a Water Vole seen at a friends garden pond.
